Replace your turntable needles!

by CultureOfNone on November 28, 2008

Okay, so I’m digitizing a heap of scraps of art/clippings/etc to use as clip art, and I come across a printed paper LP dustsleeve that Columbia Records used to further the cause of the LP, probably about 30+ years ago. I saved it for scanning because of the nifty images of records being “correctly” cared for, stored, and so forth…yet, THIS is the bit I must share:

How often does anyone actually change their styli? I mean, my current gear is a pair of Gemini “DJ-type” turntables that imitate the Technics 1200 series in glorious black plastic – but they were a mere $200 approx. (including mixer and massive hardshell dual-deck DJ travel case) at an area pawn shop. So many of my records are gritty looking oddball thrift store finds, and I haven’t bought a new Stanton 500 (that’s truly the only viable part #, right?) stylus and/or cartridge in easily 8+ years. Have I done wrong? Should I immediately shell out $30 for a couple new needles? (I have an eBay dealer bookmarked…)
