Cave In ‘Sampler’ (2001)

by CultureOfNone on June 2, 2009

Here’s a quick one (since I’m still deep into the move to Seattle, WA):

Cave In‘s big moment – to most indie folk – was the release of ‘Jupiter‘ in 2000. That album ascended from their chaotic, brutal metalcore origins…and re-invented the ensemble as Pink Floyd-meets-Hum prog-metallers with space themed cover art… once again signalling a departure into unheralded innovation.

Their next step was a (somewhat anti-climactic) major label signing, which resulted in the bargain bin title ‘Antenna‘. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I rushed out to buy it… still own it…and – ultimately- have yet to actually listen to it.
Since then, front-man Stephen Brodsky (also Stove Bredsky, etc) has been in my player for a while, and I haven’t ignored any of the experimental turns Cave In explored over the years. They are standout talents & should be mentioned alongside other genre benders such as Thought Industry or Hopesfall.

This sampler disc
is rather interesting in that it has demo versions of “Stained Silver” and “Bigger Riff”…which were both, respectively, fully revealed on the albums mentioned above. Nice material, all around.
