I labored over the concept for this one far too much, and the end product is nothing like any of the ideas I wrassled with along the way. The challenge was to paint panels of bristol with white paint, black paint, and then seven transitional shades of gray. Once a quality grayscale was attained, the painted panels were cut into portions of a thematic design involving value, and then assembled and glued to bristol. After sketching out a bunch of ‘cradle to grave’ progression images of human figures, I realized how silly – and time consuming – the project would ultimately be. So, armed with economy of knife and space, I quickly carved this one out during my lunch break on the day the assignment was due:
