UK metal band Sacrilege was pretty much doomed to obscurity from the very start. They weren’t very glamorous, they weren’t particularly evil – and their origins as a crust punk band were markedly British.
After two albums of moody, dark thrash which tended to bury Lynda “Tam” Simpson’s voice in the mix, Sacrilege basically re-invented themselves with ‘Turn Back Trilobyte’ as forerunners of the doom metal genre. The album has a pensive, deliberate pace; occasional progressive touches, and Simpson’s woe-filled melodies are pronounced and chill-inducing.
It may’ve been the odd title or the cosmic cover art that sold me on this one (for some reason, most metal bands signal their transformations in style with a space-themed album cover). But it remains a classic, one of those rare metal greats that I still own on cassette, vinyl, and CD.
